Mennonite Central Committee is appealing for $250,000 US to assist people devastated by recent earthquakes and flooding in South Asia.

More than a thousand people died and many more are still missing after two earthquakes struck the island of Sumatra in Indonesia on September 30 and October 1. Meanwhile, in the Philippines and Vietnam, communities are dealing with the aftermath of Typhoon Ketsana which dumped heavy rains and caused widespread flooding which killed hundreds of people and at least 500,000 were displaced.

MCC and its local partners are working to provide emergency shelter, food and other supplies in Indonesia and the Philippines, and planning for longer term recovery work in Vietnam. MCC is also formulating a response to the recent severe flooding in southern India which has killed more than 250 people and left some 2.5 million homeless.

Thank you so much to the sponsors, organizers, players, and supporters of the golf tournaments held this summer in Olds, Tofield, La Crete and Coaldale.  Because of your enthusiasm, hard work, and energy, over $219,000 was raised for the international work of MCC.  This money will go to build sand dams in Tanzania, help rebuild health infrastructure in Congo, and help make hope happen in other concrete ways all around the world.   Your generosity and compassion in the Name of Christ is a blessing.

New Thrift Shop in Taber Opens Its Doors!taber thrift shop

The shop held its Grand Opening on August 5; a celebration of all the hard work by volunteers, board members and more that went into making the new MCC Thrift shop in Taber a reality.
After many years of talking and dreaming, the Low German Mennonite community in and around Taber formed a board with representatives from 7 different church congregations. A building was purchased and renovated. Eva Cool, former MCC Alberta Board member, was hired as shop manager. The new shop opened its doors to the public on July 2.

We are grateful for the many volunteers who are helping to make the shop successful. If you are ever in the Taber area, stop by for a visit.
